Spring Tips for your Trees

22nd March 2019

Spring is nearly here now and it is a great time to give your trees some attention. Check out these handy tips….

Inspect your trees from all angles – Spring is a great time to examine your trees as Winter can be tough on trees. Look out for any areas of damage, disease or pest infestations. If you notice any of these, including mushrooms or other fungi growing on your tree, it usually a sign of a problem and needs to checked out professionally. A qualified tree surgeon can provide a professional inspection and offer solutions.

Prune dead or diseased tree branches – If you want healthy trees then proper pruning is vital. It helps your tree to stay healthy and removes any unsafe branches that may have suffered damage from storms or floods in the winter. Pruning large or high branches should be done by an expert who has the right equipment and training to carry out the job safely.

Mulch your trees – this helps to lock in moisture during the warmer months, Don’t overdo it, keep thickness down to a few inches and never cover the basal flare of the tree i.e. leave a clear mulch free doughnut shape around the tree trunk base. Overdoing the mulch around the trunk can deprive a tree of air, water and nutrients it needs to develop and grow.

Also if you pile mulch up right up against the trunk of the tree, the moisture and heat can’t escape, and the trunk and root can rot more easily. It can also cause developments of cankers and can encourage a secondary roots system to develop above the primary one, which could include girdling roots.

And last but not least…. why not plant a new tree? Spring is the perfect time to do so. If you would like help or advice on any of the above call us, a leading Northamptonshire Tree Surgeons on (01327) 354789.
